and it's important that president obama hasn't done a proper debate in four years. so he's coming at this with the less time he's had that he did the debate. he was not even the president yet and now he's got to defend his record and talk about what he's done in a way that he hasn't had to over the course of the last four years. governor romney though is in a position where he is -- he's gotta do something different from what he was doing during the primary debates which is not appealing to the base or sort of getting through them without making a big disaster happen but instead, positively proactively appealing to people and making the connection that he hasn't been able to make with large part to the electorate so far. >> john: how does he do that? >> it's a tough question. i'm not sure that i have a better answer than the legion of debate coaches that governor romney has working with him. but he has to -- it seems to make it clear to people that he understands what they're going through in a way that's not simply numbers on a graph. but he needs to do it in a way

and what was odd about barack obama was that four years ago, he looked like this rock star whenever he appeared in public, onstage, on the stump, whatever. last night he looked like the guy, just wanted to quit the band. just sort of artistic differences had set in. there was a sort of odd body language, deflation which if i was a supporter, i would really be quite concerned about. >> he likes to go out and campaign and talk about all the things he's going to do. what he doesn't like to do is defend the record of what he's done. and unless he gets comfortable with that, unless he can come up with some better answers and do so in a way that's compelling, mitt romney's going to have a good run here between now and election day and obviously, with early voting starting, in some of the key states, such as ohio, north carolina, i think next week, this time is going to be very, very precious for him. they're not going to have a debate now for i guess what is it, a week or two, and this is going to all be to the advantage of governor romney. >> momentum is a big thing in any political electio

this by the way is the year that president obama took office. compared to that, 110,000 on friday would be good. but over the past few years, the job market has been kind of stuck. we have been adding enough jobs to keep up with population growth. >> talk about housing here. we have seen some recent improvements. do we think it is in full recovery mode? >> economists think it is, the housing recovery could be taking hold at this point. there was a cnn money survey done that said nine out of 14 economists say that home prices are higher or will turn higher this year. home prices have been going up over the past three months. we can put up a chart here to show you that the small increase, if you can see it on the right side of the screen there, it means prices have found the bottom, that's a good sign for the recovery to take hold in housing. home sales are also higher. home construction is rebounding. mort rates are at record lows. all this stuff helps push along the housing recovery. suzanne. >> you got improvement of jobs, a recovery in housing

here is -- romney has had 20 to 25 debates this year and barack obama has not had one for four years, and it was obvious he wasn't used to it. his body language was horrible. the fact he dropped his head, and he looked like a whipped dog to me. >> stephanie: uh-huh. >> but they can adjust this. they can fix it and it's like i said their strategy was, don't lose what we got. and it never works in politics don't lose what we have already got never works. if the other guy is coming at you, and you are just on the defense. it's obvious you are just trying to hang on to what you got. >> stephanie: yeah, the president is pulling so far ahead in so many polls, and mitt romney has had such a disastrous two months do you think the president felt like he didn't have to fact check him again? >> who knows. the whole point is they were on defense and you can't go there. i would have tried to have buried him last night, and tried to end it you know, right there. make the rest of the debates completely inconsequence shall and just take him down, but they chose not to do that. it was their strategy.
